“Concertiste armé pour tous les défis” selon le magazine musical Diapason, le clarinettiste Nicolas Baldeyrou peut en effet se targuer, à tout juste 40 ans, d’une carrière déjà bien prolifique.
Diplômé du CNSMD de Paris où il étudie notamment auprès de Michel Arrignon, Jérôme Julien-Lafferrière et de Jean-Noël Crocq pour la clarinette basse, Nicolas Baldeyrou ne tarde pas à se faire remarquer sur la scène internationale en remportant trois concours de premier plan : le prestigieux Concours de l’ARD de Munich (Allemagne) en 1998, le Concours de Dos Hermanas à Séville (Espagne) en 1999 et enfin la ICA Young Artist Competition (États-Unis) en 2001. Il est également lauréat des Révélations de l’Adami, de la Fondation Natixis, du Bunkamura Orchard Hall Award mais aussi du célèbre programme “Rising Stars” de l’European Concert Hall Organisation en 2004.
Musicien très précoce, amoureux de son instrument dont il est aujourd’hui l’un des interprètes les plus virtuoses et inspiré, Nicolas Baldeyrou est très régulièrement invité à se produire en soliste avec les plus grands orchestres européens et internationaux tels que le Sinfonia Varsovia, l’Orchestre de la Radio Bavaroise, l’Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio-France, l’Orchestre National de France, la Philharmonie tchèque, les Orchestres Philharmoniques de Tokyo, Prague et Saint-Pétersbourg et ce sous la direction de chefs renommés parmi lesquels Myung-Whun Chung, Mihhail Gerts, Sir Colin Davis, Kurt Masur ou bien encore Claudio Abbado. Il est de plus invité récurrent des Folles Journées de Nantes, Tokyo et Varsovie et est, entre autres, fréquemment programmé au Carnegie Hall de New York, au Concertgebouw d’Amsterdam, à la Cité de la musique à Paris, à la Philharmonie de Cologne, au Mozarteum de Salzbourg, au Konzerthaus de Vienne, au Palais des Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles, au Bunkamura Orchard Hall de Tokyo ou au Conservatoire Tchaïkovsky de Moscou.
Avide de rencontres et de nouvelles découvertes humaines et musicales, Nicolas se consacre désormais à une triple carrière : soliste tout d’abord mais aussi musicien d’orchestre au sein de l’Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio-France où il est nommé première clarinette solo en 2011, puis, également depuis sa création en 2018, au sein de l’orchestre symphonique éphémère Sinfonia Grange au Lac – orchestre composé exclusivement des solistes issus des meilleures phalanges européennes et dirigé par les plus grands chefs actuels, Esa-Pekka Salonen et Gustavo Dudamel.
Soucieux de transmettre son art au plus grand nombre, Nicolas Baldeyrou consacre le troisième pan de sa carrière à l’enseignement, principalement au CNSMD de Lyon où il est professeur depuis 2006 mais aussi par de nombreuses masterclasses qu’il dispense à travers le monde. Il a d’ailleurs très récemment été nommé “Visiting Professor” au Conservatoire Royal d’Écosse à Glasgow.
Récitaliste accompli, Nicolas Baldeyrou n’en néglige pas pour autant la musique de chambre. Membre fondateur du Quatuor Vendôme, quatuor de clarinettes avec lequel il a gravé plusieurs disques, c’est un chambriste d’exception qui sait s’entourer de l’élite de ses contemporains. Ses partenaires réguliers ont ainsi pour noms Bertrand Chamayou, Nikolaï Lugansky, Svetlin Roussev, Antoine Tamestit, Marc Coppey, François Salque mais aussi Alexeï Ogrintchouk, David Walter, David Guerrier, Julien Hardy ou bien encore le Quintette Moraguès et les Quatuors Modigliani, Ébène, Psophos…
Son abondante discographie est fréquemment plébiscitée par la critique internationale. Son album Rhapsodie, paru chez Klarthe en 2015 et consacré à la musique française pour clarinette et piano a reçu de nombreuses récompenses en France et à l’étranger (dont 4 étoiles de Classica). Novembre 2018 a vu la sortie d’un nouvel opus dédié à Weber (Klarthe) avec l’Orchestre Victor Hugo Franche-Comté sous la direction de Jean-François Verdier. Un album Brahms est également en préparation avec le pianiste Geoffroy Couteau et le violoncelliste Raphaël Perraud (à paraître en 2019 chez la Dolce Volta) ainsi qu’un enregistrement de l’Octuor de Schubert (Alpha) et un disque de musique contemporaine consacré aux compositeurs Pierre Boulez, Bruno Mantovani et Michael Jarrell.
Enfin, sa passion pour l’exploration de nouveaux répertoires et son souci d’authenticité dans ses interprétations amènent naturellement Nicolas à s’intéresser aux clarinettes historiques. Il est régulièrement invité par Marc Minkowski à participer à l’orchestre Les Musiciens du Louvre, par Emmanuelle Haïm à l’ensemble Le Concert d’Astrée ou encore par Emmanuel Krivine à la Chambre Philharmonique.
Officiellement nommé essayeur de la marque en 2004, Nicolas Baldeyrou est également membre de la cellule Research & Development et contribue ainsi au rayonnement de l’école et de la facture française partout dans le monde.

After graduating from the CNSMD (National Conservatory of Music and Dance) of Paris where he studied under the tutelage of Michel Arrignon, Jérôme Julien-Laferrière and Jean-Noël Crocq for bass clarinet, Nicolas Baldeyrou soon distinguished himself on the international stage, winning three leading music competitions: the prestigious Munich ARD Competition in Munich (Germany) in 1998, the Dos Hermanas Competition in Sevilla (Spain) in 1999, and finally, the ICA Young Artist Competition (United States) in 2001. He is also laureate of the Adami revelations of the Natixis Foundation, of the Bunkamura Orchard Hall Award, and was honored in 2004 with his work in the renowned “Rising Stars” programme coordinated by the European Concert Hall Organisation.
A precocious musician who loves his instrument, he is one of the most virtuosic and inspired performers today. Nicolas Baldeyrou is regularly invited to play as a soloist with the most respected European and international orchestras, such as Sinfonia Varsovia, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Radio-France Philharmonic Orchestra, the National Orchestra of France, the Czech Philharmonic, the Tokyo, Prague, and Saint-Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestras under the batons of leading directors such as Myung-Whun Chung, Mihhail Gerts, Sir Colin Davis, Kurt Masur, and Claudio Abbado. He is a recurring guest on the Folles Journées Festivals in Nantes, Tokyo, and Varsaw and gives recitals at New York’s Carnegie Hall, the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, the Cité de la musique in Paris, the Kölner Philharmony, the Salzburg Mozarteum, the Vienna Konzerthaus, the Centre for Fine Arts in Brussels, the Bunkamura Orchard Hall in Tokyo, and the Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory.
Eager to meet new people and discover new human and musical richness, Nicolas now dedicates himself to a trifold career: soloist first, but also orchestra musician within the Radio-France Philharmonic Orchestra where he was appointed first clarinet in 2011. He has also been a member of the symphonic ephemeral orchestra Sinfonia Grange au Lac – an orchestra, since its creation in 2018, exclusively composed of the finest musicians in Europe and directed by some of the best conductors of the international scene, Esa-Pekka Salonen and Gustavo Dudamel.
Mindful of transmitting his art to a wide range of people, Nicolas Baldeyrou dedicates the third part of his career to clarinet education, mainly at the CNSMDP of Lyon where he has been teaching since 2006, but also to masterclasses throughout the world. He has been recently appointed “Visiting Professor” by the Royal Conservatory of Scotland based in Glasgow.
An accomplished recitalist, Nicolas Baldeyrou does not neglect chamber music. A founding member of the Vendôme Clarinet Quartet with whom he recorded several discs, he is an exceptional chambrist who knows how to surround himself with his elite contemporaries. His regular partners have included Bertrand Chamayou, Nikolai Lugansky, Svetlin Roussev, Antoine Tamestit, Marc Coppey, François Salque, Alexei Ogrintchouk, David Walter, David Guerrier, Julien Hardy, the Moraguès Quintet, and the Modigliani, Ébène, Psophos Quartets.
His extensive discography regularly enjoys worldwide critical acclaim. His album Rhapsodie, released on the Klarthe music label in 2015 and dedicated to French music for clarinet and piano, was awarded several prizes both in France and abroad (including four stars by Classica). November 2018 saw the release of a new opus devoted to Weber (Klarthe) recorded with the Victor Hugo Franche Comté Orchestra under the baton of Jean-François Verdier. A Brahms album is currently in production with French pianist Geoffroy Couteau and cellist Raphaël Perraud (to be released in 2019 under the label La Dolce Volta) as well as a recording of Schubert’s Octet (Alpha) and a CD of contemporary music dedicated to composers Pierre Boulez, Bruno Mantovani, and Michael Jarrell.
Finally, his passion for exploring new repertoires and his commitment to authenticity in his performances lead Nicolas naturally towards an interest in historical clarinets. He is regularly invited to play by Marc Minkowski with Les Musiciens du Louvre, by Emmanuelle Haïm with Le Concert d’Astrée ensemble, and by Emmanuel Krivine and La Chambre Philharmonique.
An official tester for the brand since 2004, Nicolas Baldeyrou is one of the members of the R&D centre and thus contributes to the development of the clarinet and to the influence of the French savoir-faire throughout the world.
