Acclamé pour son sens artistique, sa musicalité et sa virtuosité hors du commun, le violoniste Dong-Suk Kang sest produit sur les cinq continents. Dominic Gill, critique musical londonien, décrit Dong-Suk Kang, dans son ouvrage « Le livre du violon », comme « lun des plus grands violonistes du monde. Sa technique souple et son archet parfait produisent certainement un des plus beaux sons de violon qui puisse être entendu aujourdhui ». Ormandy, Serkin, Menuhin, Francescatti, ainsi que d'autres musiciens éminents l'ont aussi consacré comme l'un des plus exceptionnels violonistes de sa génération et comme un musicien hors pair.
Né en Corée, Dong-Suk Kang se rend à New York afin d'étudier à la Juilliard School puis au Curtis Institute avec Ivan Galamian.
Il apparaît sur la scène américaine en 1971 et fait sensation en gagnant deux concours importants : San Francisco Symphony Foundation Competition et Merriweather Post Competition à Washington.
Après ses débuts au Kennedy Center et une prestation sous la direction de Seiji Ozawa, il obtient des prix aux concours internationaux de Montréal, Carl Flesch à Londres et Reine Elisabeth à Bruxelles.
Depuis lors, il a été l'invité de nombreux grands orchestres parmi lesquels, en Amérique, ceux de Philadelphie, Cleveland, Los Angeles, Saint Louis, San Francisco, Washington, Montréal, et en Europe, le Royal Philharmonic, le London Philharmonia, les orchestres de la B.B.C., English Chamber, Academy of St. Martin, Halle, Birmingham, Scottish National, Munich Philharmonic, Stuttgart, Gewandhaus, Orchestres Nationaux de France, de Belgique et de Pologne, Rotterdam, Göteborg, Saint-Pétersbourg, Moscow Philharmonic
Ses tournées en Asie l'ont ammené à se produire avec les orchestres N.H.K., Yomiuri et Tokyo Metropolitan, Hong Kong, Singapour, Malaysian Philharmonic, K.B.S. et l'Orchestre Philarmonique de Séoul avec lequel il a donné plusieurs séries de concerts aux U.S.A. et en Europe.
Il s'est également produit dans toutes les grandes villes dAustralie avec les six orchestres de lAustalian Broadcasting Corporation.
Dong-Suk Kang a joué, entre autres, sous la direction de Dutoit, Ozawa, Masur, Järvi, Menuhin, Salonen, Chung, Slatkin, Barshaï, Jansons, Foster, Norrington, Berglund , Svetlanov et Helbig.
Les plus grandes scènes du monde (Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Musikverein, Concertgebouw, Opéra de Sydney, Royal Albert Hall, Théâtre des Champs-Elysées , Suntory Hall de Tokyo
) l'ont accueilli et ses concerts ont été fréquemment retransmis à la télévision et à la radio dans un grand nombre de pays.
Sa vive attirance pour la musique de chambre nous a valu ses prestations aux festivals de Kuhmo, Korsholm, Spoleto, Santa Fe, Seattle, Vancouver, Newport, Australian Festival of Chamber Music
En tant qu'invité de la « Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center » à New York, il s'est produit à la Maison Blanche et a effectué plusieurs tournées aux U.S.A.
Le répertoire de Dong-Suk Kang est très étendu : du baroque à la musique de nos jours, il inclut des créations contemporaines tels que le concerto dAlan Hoddinott (commande de la B.B.C.) et les 1er et 3ème concertos d'Isang Yun (dans le cadre du « World Music Days »).
La même ouverture se retrouve dans sa discographie. En plus des grandes uvres du répertoires (Bruch, Saint-Saens, Ravel, Fauré, Debussy, Schubert, Sibelius, etc
), il a enregistré le concerto de Nielsen, celui dElgar, lintégrale de la musique de chambre de Honneger et d'Alkan et la sonate de Furtwängler.
Ses enregistrements chez Naxos, Bis et Timpani ont reçu des critiques élogieuses et remporté, entre autre, le Grand Prix du Disque de lAcadémie Charles Cros et celui de la Nouvelle Académie du Disque. Son enregistrement du concerto de Walton a été consacré « CD du mois » par le magazine « Gramophone » et nominé pour le « Gramophone Award ».
Dong-Suk Kang est régulièrement invité en tant que membre du jury dans les grands concours internationaux : Reine Elisabeth, Indianapolis, Wieniawski, Long-Thibaud, Menuhin, Montréal, Michael Hill, Sendai, Qindao, Tibor Varga, etc
Il est professeur à l'Université de Yonsei à Séoul. Il est directeur artistique du « Seoul Spring Festival » en Corée ainsi que du festival « MusicAlp » en France.
Dong-Suk Kang est Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et Lettres.

Tours of Asia have brought performances with the orchestras of NHK, Yomiuri, Tokyo Metropolitan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Beijing, Shanghai, KBS and Seoul Philharmonic with whom, he has toured the U.S.A. and Europe. He has also performed with all the major Australian orchestras.
The conductors he has worked with include Dutoit, Ozawa, Masur, Jarvi, Menuhin, Salonen, Slatkin, Chung, Barshai, Jansons, Norrington, Foster, Svetlanov, Berglund, Lazarev and Herbig.
He has performed at major music centers and festivals throughout the world and his concerts, such as London Proms, were frequently televised and broadcast on the radio in many countries. His strong interest in chamber music has resulted in his participation at various chamber music festivals including those in Spoleto, Santa Fe, Kuhmo, Korsholm, Seattle, Vancouver, Newport and Australian Festival of Chamber Music. As a guest artist with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center he has performed in New York and toured throughout the country.
Dong-Suk Kangs wide-ranging repertoire includes all the standard works as well as many unusual and neglected works. He has given the premiere of the violin concerto « Mistral » by Alan Hoddinott in Great Britain which was commissioned by BBC as well as the Asian premier of the the Third Concerto by Isang Yun at the opening concert of « World Music Days » Festival after having performed Isang Yun's First Concerto earlier.
In the field of recording, in addition to the well-known works, such as Vivaldi Four Seasons (with Academy of St. Martin in the Fields), he has recorded Nielsen and Elgar concertos, complete chamber music of Honegger and Alkan, and Furtwängler Sonata.
His recordings have won critical acclaim and awards among which are the Grand Prix du disque from both the Académie Charles Cros and the Nouvelle Académie du disque. His Walton Concerto CD was chosen as the CD of the month by the Gramophone magazine and nominated for the « Gramophone Award ».
He has served on the jury for the major international competitions, the Queen Elisabeth, Indianapolis, Montreal, Wieniawski, Long-Thibaud, Menuhin, Michael Hill, Sendai, Tibor Varga, Qingdao and others.
Dong-Suk Kang is a professor at Yonsei University in Seoul and artistic director of both « MusicAlp Festival » in France and « Seoul Spring Festival » in Korea.
